Abstract:
In general, recommender systems attempt to present the
user with items (movies, music, books, news, web pages)
that the user will like. Many such systems use
"collaborative filtering", which base their prediction
on how similar users rate similar items.
The challenge, of course, is determining which users
and items are sufficiently similar, based on a dataset
of known ratings.

In October 2006, Netflix released such a dataset,
containing 100 million user-movie ratings, and offered
a $1M prize to any system that could beat the accuracy
of its recommendation system, Cinematch, by 10%.

I briefly describe the challenge itself, review related
works and the approaches by the top teams on the leader
board, and summarize our team's (Reel Ingenuity) progress
to date.
